Easy & Healthy Homemade Granola

Easy, healthy, and delicious is my motto for kid-friendly recipes. Made with only 6 ingredients, this homemade granola is satisfyingly crunchy with just a touch of sweetness.

Also, this recipe is nut-free! If you have a family member who has a nut allergy or your child is in a nut-free classroom at school, you know how difficult it can be to find nut-free foods. After I could not find any granola in stores that was nut-free, I decided to make my own.

Homemade granola is very versatile too. There are lots of optional add-ins to customize this recipe with all your favorites. If you love nuts in granola, you can always add in some pecans or slivered almonds.

Easy & Healthy Homemade Granola Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups old-fashioned rolls oats
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries

Optional Add-Ins

  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1/4 cup nuts of choice
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips

Notes: For the oats, old-fashioned rolled oats hold up better for baking compared to quick oats.

For the oil, I tend to use olive oil for everything to keep things simple. Coconut oil would be tasty too, if you are not trying to keep your recipe nut-free.

Directions

Preheat oven to 275 degree Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl, combine your oats, cinnamon and salt.

Spread the mixture onto the lined baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes, stirring the granola halfway through.

When you remove the granola from the oven, it will still feel soft. As it cools for about 30 minutes, it will harden. When cool, add the cranberries or any other optional add-ins.

Storage

After the granola is fully cool, it can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

  1. This looks absolutely delicious and way less expensive than store bought… I’m going to try it! I have a seriously picky 4 year old on my hands… maybe she’ll dig this in some yogurt! (I might throw in some chocolate chips as well..)

    1. Making homemade granola is definitely less expensive and healthier than the store bought granola!

Adding chocolate is always a winner with my kids too. =)

  2. I didn’t even know you could make granola at home, and this is coming from a guy that considers himself a chef.

Such an easy recipe. I’ll make sure to try it these days. I’ve been into healthy eating for the past couple of years, and this is a great add-on to my book of recipes.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Gorjan, that’s great that you are eating healthier these days. I hope this granola recipe turns out well for you! If you have any questions or issues while making it, I’d be happy to help.

  3. Some good tips here Leah. We’ve had far too many lockdowns here in Europe since COVID started so the kid in particular have been experimenting with their breakfasts. I hate them eating store bought cereals and they love taking on recipes so definitely one to try out and experiment with.

    Thanks for sharing – Jason.

    1. Yes, definitely easy enough for kids to help make this recipe as well. Plus, it’s very versatile if you want to add in or substitute any of your favorite extras. Enjoy!
